Self-reliance is such an important aspect of our lives. It empowers us to take charge of our actions and make choices that align with our goals. I believe that self-reliance stems from motivation, self-confidence, and the belief that we can shape our own destiny. However, we must also be mindful of not taking it to the extreme, where we become hesitant to ask for help even when we need it the most. This can lead to anxiety or depression when we feel unsupported. As a therapist or coach, I believe it's crucial to help our clients strike a balance between self-reliance and seeking the support of others when necessary.
One quote that has always resonated with me on this topic is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “It is easy to live for others, everybody does. I call on you to live for yourself.” This quote inspires me to prioritize my own needs and ambitions while also finding ways to give back to those around me.
If you're looking for a science-based tool to help increase your self-control and practice the self-reliance needed to achieve your goals, I recommend trying out this exercise. It's a helpful way to learn how to regulate your thoughts, emotions, and moods and build resilience to overcome setbacks.
Finally, I recently read a book called "Self-Determination Theory: Basic Psychological Needs in Motivation, Development, and Wellness" by Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in psychology and motivation. It explores how meeting three basic psychological needs - relatedness, autonomy, and competence - can lead to mental wellness and success in various aspects of life.
Asking ourselves the question, "How do you know when you need help and when to keep pushing forward?" is a vital part of self-reliance. While it's important to have control over our lives, it's also important to recognize when we need support and encouragement from others. Striking a balance between self-reliance and seeking help can be a powerful tool in achieving our goals and living fulfilling lives
